First of all one might ask why Escherichia coli bacteria specifically, why was this particular bacteria selected. Not that I’d necessarily expect you to know the answer to that Hedley.
You begin to wonder whether the tampering with this particular bacteria may be behind its ability to cause horrific apparently untreatable food poisoning.
Then it seems that the ability to produce insulin using this method may be viewed as the most successful invention they’ve achieved. Approved in 1982. Are there others, but we just haven’t heard about them?
Recombinant bovine growth hormone made it to the market by 1994, to cause cows to produce more milk, and was/is purely about corporate profits, harmful to cows and consumers alike.
Another great comment Sandra. The conclusion I have come to is that biologics- based therapies are still in their infancy, both in terms of avoiding contamination and other quality deviations in the supply chain, and the impact of putting living organisms into the human body.
It all needs to be stopped until a complete review has been carried out - biosimilar approvals are the next looming disaster if nothing is done…
